Canadian Heritage Moment:
*Today’s Canadian heritage moment is about “Les Filles du Roi”, which means daughters of the King.  In the early days France struggled to convince French men and women to immigrate to New France due to the harsh environment and the threat of raids.  The French government commissioned Jean Talon to find a way to increase the population and while he was in New France he conducted the first population census in North American history.  He devised a plan to bring women of childbearing again to New France where they would marry the local men and start families.  Marriages were encouraged, baby bonuses were awarded, and pensions were offered to large families. When he arrived in France, Talon found 3,215 people and when he left a few years later there were 6,700 thus creating a unique, native born “Canadien” people.
