Canadian Heritage:
*Today’s Canadian Heritage fact is about the ship The Hector.  The Hector sailed from Scotland and landed in Pictou Nova Scotia with 189 Gaelic speaking settlers, mostly from Loch Broom.  The conditions were poor onboard ship and 18 settlers died of dysentery and small pox during the voyage.  However, this was the beginning of major Scottish settlement in NS.  50,000 settlers would arrive in Cape Breton and mainland NS between 1815 and 1870, they built towns, communities and businesses from the ground up, firmly entrenching themselves as one of the unique groups of Euro-Canadians profoundly shaping our province’s culture and heritage.
