Dear Lockview High families:
We hope you are enjoying a wonderful summer! We are excited to begin another school year at Lockview High and look forward to seeing our students next week.
Staff will be welcomed back to school on Tuesday, September 1st.
Wednesday, September 2nd, all staff will be engaged in professional learning activities for the entire day.
First day for students is Thursday, September 3rd.
Our theme this year at LHS is ‘Miller The Dragon: Fiercely Kind, Proudly United’! Dragons are often depicted as powerful and strong. We believe Miller the Dragon uses that power and strength to inspire each of us in our school community to be fiercely kind and proudly united. Together, we can make this the most wonderful school year ever!
There is a lot of important information to share with our families at the beginning of each school year. Please read the information sent out in our communications carefully.
- First Day of School
On the first day of school (Thursday, September 3rd), all students will enter via the main front doors of the school. Students in grades 10-12 will proceed directly to their first period class for Day A (A block on Day A). Grade 9 students should proceed directly to the gymnasium, where they will be greeted by the administration and introduced to their A block teachers before going with those teachers to their first period class. Students should check their PowerSchool bell schedule before September 3rd and make note of their first period class on that Thursday, as well as its location. Staff and Student Council members will be present in the main forum to help direct students.
- School Supplies– Students should have a binder, paper and pens/pencils to begin the school year. Individual teachers will tell students on the first day of school if there are other specific supplies needed for their course. To support our families during this difficult financial time, basic school supplies are available in the library and the Schools Plus room for students to pick up (no questions asked). If any of our families have extra school supplies that they would like to donate to enhance our supply, we would greatly appreciate it.
- Student Parking
There is one designated student parking lot. Student parking is available on a first-come, first park basis.
Staff will have parking permits on display in their vehicles; students will not. There is a Parking Officer on site who will issue tickets to student vehicles that are a) not parked in the marked parking spaces in the student parking lot and b) parked in staff or visitor parking spaces.
Signage clearly indicates where students can park.
Students are encouraged to carpool as much as possible. A reminder that in the second half of the school year, we usually have an increase in the number of students earning their driver’s license and bringing vehicles to school. Students should be prepared for this as ALL students will have equal access to student parking.
Please have a conversation with your student driver about the importance of respecting the land our school is on by not littering. As stated in our land acknowledgment each day, Lockview High is in the unceded territory of the Mi’kmaw people and we are all called to respect this land. All garbage should be placed in a garbage can at school or left in the vehicle to dispose of later. Student drivers should use the outdoor etiquette rule “Leave No Trace”.
Parking on school property is at your own risk. The school is not responsible nor liable for any damage that may occur to your vehicle while you are parked on school property.
- Final Assessment Dates –
Semester 1 - Final Assessments in January will be written from January 20-29th inclusive. Final assessments not in the form of an examination will take place in classes from January 20-25th. Final assessments in the form of examinations will be scheduled January 26-29th.
Semester 2 - Final Assessments in June will be written from June 16-25th, inclusive. Final assessments not in the form of an examination will take place in classes from June 16-21st. Final assessments in the form of examinations will be scheduled June 22-25th.
Students are expected to be present to complete all final assessments in each semester in the timeframes outlined above. Missing a final assessment can have a significant impact on a student’s final grade.
- Student Fees– Student fees are $25 this year for ALL students. Student fees are needed to provide a wide variety of student events throughout the school year for ALL students to enjoy. Student fees can be paid by cash or cheque to Mrs. Daigle in Student Services or online using SchoolsCash. If paying student fees is a financial strain for your family, please email your child’s vice-principal and they will be waived confidentially.
- Course/Class Change Requests
Course changes will only occur twice within the school year, once in the first week of September and again at the end of January for second semester.
Course changes are only considered in the following circumstances:
1. The scheduling process has resulted in an incomplete schedule
2. A student does not have a pre-requisite for a course in their schedule OR the course and its pre-requisite are scheduled in reverse order.
3. A course is scheduled for which a credit has been previously granted.
4. A failing grade was obtained in a required course and it needs to be repeated.
5. A student was unsuccessful in a course and wants to change academic levels i.e. Math 11 to Math at Work 11.
6. A grade 11 or 12 student who is carrying more than the required course load (8 for Gr 11 or 7/8 for grade 12) would like to drop the extra course.
7. A course change request is also considered for the following prioritized reasons:
-a potential graduate lacks a required course to complete graduation requirements
-a student requires a course for their identified post-secondary path
Students will receive the Course Correction Request Form in their GNSPES email at the end of the day on Friday, September 4th. Forms must be submitted before noon on Wednesday, September 9th.
- Chrome Books – All school Chrome books have been allocated to classrooms for student use. Teachers will provide students with Chromebooks in class if they are required to complete schoolwork. Students are encouraged to use school Chromebooks and computers while at school. Chrome books will not be assigned to individual students in grades 11 and 12. Grade 10 students are expected to use the chrome books they were given at the start of grade 9 for all high school grades.
***Again this year, all grade 9 students will receive a new Chrome Book in September to keep and use in grades 9-12***
Thank you for being such a wonderful school community and for your continued support as we begin another school year. Please reach out to our main office if you have any questions or concerns.
Kind regards,
K. MacLeod, Principal
