In honour of African Heritage Month, here is some information on a prominent African Nova Scotian: William Hall
William Hall was a Black Nova Scotian sailor and the first Black person and first Nova Scotian to receive the Victoria Cross, the British Empire’s highest military honor. Born in 1827 to formerly enslaved parents in Horton Bluff, Nova Scotia, Hall joined the Royal Navy and served with distinction. He earned the Victoria Cross for his bravery during the 1857 Siege of Lucknow in India, where he manned a naval gun under heavy fire. Despite facing racial barriers, Hall’s courage and service made him a trailblazer in Canadian military history, and his legacy continues to inspire generations.
