Black History Month:
*Every February, Canadians are invited to participate in Black History Month events that honour the legacy of Black Canadians, past and present. The 2020 theme is: "Canadians of African Descent: Going forward, guided by the past."  In recognition of contributions made by African Canadians we will be providing you with a Black History Month fact each day of this month on our morning announcements.

*Mathieu Da Costa was the first person of African heritage to come to what is now Canada. In 1604, Da Costa arrived with the French explorers Pierre Du Gua De Monts and Samuel de Champlain. Da Costa, a multilingual interpreter who spoke English, French, Dutch, Portuguese, and Pidgin Basque, provided an invaluable link with the Mik’maq people encountered by the Europeans. French documents record da Costa as working for the leaders of Port Royal, NS in 1608 and a plaque commemorating his contribution can be found as part of the Mathieu da Costa African Heritage Trail in Port Royal.
