In honour of African Heritage Month, here is some information on a prominent African Nova Scotian: Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard.
Dr. Wanda Thomas Bernard is a highly regarded social worker, educator, researcher, community activist and advocate of social change hailing from East Preston. She is the first Black Canadian to have an academic tenure position and become a full professor at Dalhousie University where her research focused on anti-oppression and diversity. In 2016, she was named to the Senate of Canada by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and she is the first African Nova Scotian woman to serve in the Senate Chamber. She has received the Order of Nova Scotia and the Order of Canada for her work addressing racism and diversity in the field of social work.
